From a patent medicine small trader to a university graduate. From a banking officer to a bank executive in 7 short years. From a Sapele small town boy to Lekki peninsular!
I was born of a humble background in Sapele, Delta State. As a little boy, my goal was to become a university graduate. Shortly after my secondary school education, my father fell ill, and later passed on, unfortunately. I got a job as a school teacher, but it didn’t pay very well. My goal of becoming a university graduate was imperilled. Things were bad.
With the encouragement of a childhood friend (Adolph), I set up a patent medicine store; and my girl friend served as sales girl. This financed my university education. Then I joined corporate Nigeria as a banking officer.
Mine is the story of a young banker who after 7 years of stagnation as a banking officer, I worked my way from a banking officer to a bank executive within the second 7 years! From the first 7 years to the second 7 years – same period of time, but with totally different productivity results. What happened?
A few new habits I learnt from two extraordinary men (Dr Rotimi Adelola and Mr. Akinfemiwa Akinsola – my mentors) marked a turning point in my life – doubled my productivity and turned my life around
I had successful careers in corporate Nigeria:
- Introduced Commitment to business excellence programme (Cobex) at Skye bank. Report card: Skye bank was listed in the coveted KPMG Top 10 customer service chart in 2007
- Introduced CChamp (Customer Championship programme) at oceanic bank (now Ecobank). Report card – Oceanic bank featured in the KPMG Top 10 customer service banks in 2008.
- Introduced the voice of the customer programme (VOC) at union bank. Report card: KPMG results showed improvements in union bank’s customer service positions for all customer segments – retail, commercial & corporate – in 2015 over 2014.
And held a number of management jobs – process director at Skye bank; group head customer care & member executive management committee at Oceanic Bank (now Ecobank); group head strategy & member executive management committee at Bank of Industry; group head & member, general management committee at Union Bank Plc; amongst others.
Having directly lived it with amazing results, my mission now is to share my experiences and my ideas – “pulling back the curtain” – as it were, to reveal some of the most effective strategies and productive habits I have ever used.
