Are you preparing for 2019?

Congratulations on making it to the end of another year. Caffeinate and power through,..

Now, was 2018 the best year of your life, or was it like any other?
It came, it went, and now you are gearing up for 2019!

Many of us just hope (or pray) that every year would get better and better without putting in place any particular plan or preparation.

Result: we end up living the priorities of those who do. That’s why for instance, many professors and a good number of well educated people work for people who barely had good education!

And when we fail to plan, we actually fall into the law of accident…

This was me until I met my mentor, Dr Rotimi Adelola… back in year 2000

“Mike, do you have a plan for your work?” He asked

I said “No sir”

“Please prepare a plan for me to look at; list the things you plan to do for the next quarter. Use letters to assign priority, where A means “very important”, and D means “least important”

I prepared the plan, listing up to 20 activities for the period, and sent to him. Of these, I assigned “A” to about 16 activities! At least, to show him that most of the activities I planned to do were very important!

“Mike, are you sure about this?” he asked, “looking closely at your list, I find that about 4 activities account for all the others put together”!

“But sir, most of what I listed are actually very important”

“Have you heard about the Pareto principle?”

“Yes sir, but I don’t really understand how it works”

“Very well. The Pareto principle is also called the 80/20 rule. This means, 20% of your activities will result in 80 of your results”.

I get it…

This means only 20% of the activities on my list will actually turn out to be very important! That is, four priority activities on my list will account for 80% of my result. Wow!

Since then, I have spent the past years planning to make each year better, and setting goals with priorities. And that’s best way to prepare and live our best year yet.

So what are my priorities for 2019?

A few of my priorities include: to expand my online school business, relationship with my family, and how I grow my physical health.
